6 Supplements and Vitamins for Joint Health
1. Vitamin B Complex
B vitamins are a group of water-soluble, non-antioxidant vitamins which play crucial roles in cell metabolism. Generally, these vitamins may help with joint pain by facilitating cellular functions specifically the production of synovial fluids and strengthening the surrounding tissue.

In another study testing the effects of the combination of vitamin B9 and B12, hand osteoarthritis patients who took the combined dose showed significantly better hand grip versus the patients who only took vitamin B9 or the placebo.
The results of a study published in the Journal of Inflammation Research with 72 osteoarthritis patients also reported that regular intake of vitamin B3 supplements improved the subjects joint mobility and improved their overall symptoms by 29%.
Lastly, vitamin B15 or Pangamic acid may also help in addressing joint pain. It can diffuse lactic acid buildup in the joints and reduce inflammation.
2. Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that can reduce joint inflammation and pain by flushing out free radicals from the body. It also protects the connective tissues around the joint by promoting the production of collagen, the main protein in the joint and bone tissue.
3. Vitamin D
Vitamin D is crucial in muscle and bone function. It may also help with inflammation.
As a result, vitamin D has been used to relieve joint pain especially if the cause is inflammation.
There are studies linking vitamin D deficiency and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a condition where chronic inflammation affects the joints.
- A 2016 review of studies reported that RA patients had notably lower vitamin D levels in their blood than people without the condition. The researchers also found that RA patients were more likely to have vitamin D deficiency.
- A 2012 study posted that vitamin D deficiency may be a risk factor for the development of inflammatory conditions like RA. It may also worsen inflammatory conditions.
Despite these promising findings, a 2015 large-scale study by Cochrane concluded that the existing evidence isn’t strong enough to establish a definitive link between chronic pain conditions like RA and vitamin D deficiency. More studies are needed to prove this link.
Rheumatologists sometimes recommend vitamin D supplementation because RA patients have a greater risk of osteoporosis. If you’d like to take vitamin D for your joint pain, it’s best to consult your doctor first.
